Sheila Richardson is an award winning artist. She studied at the Limerick School of Art in 1991 gaining a Distinction in painting. She received an Arts Council grant to pursue a Master degree at the University of Wales and while there won the Liquitex prize for outstanding talent in the discipline of painting. She continued her postgraduate studies in Art & Design at the University of Brighton and taught  Art & design for 10 years in her post as Head of Department in Canterbury, Kent. During her years in the UK she exhibited with the Markovitch Gallery in London and the Terence Macklin Gallery in Kent. Returning to Ireland in 2009, she retrained as an Art Psychotherapist and is now resident artist at Draiocht Art Gallery, Adare.

Her continued success as a prolific and talented painter saw her come first place in the annual Plein Air Competition Adare, while receiving a special invitation to exhibit in the 189^th annual Royal Hibernian Academy exhibition. She is supported by the Limerick Arts and Development office with a studio fellowship at the Cappamore Artist Studio Complex, Co. Limerick. She is a Visual Arts lecturer at Mary Immaculate College Limerick and a Narrative 4 Facilitator and Mentor with the Global Organisation Narrative 4 founded by the Irish writer Collum Mcann. Recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at the Courthouse Art Gallery and Studios in Co. Clare ‘The Green Road, Painting the Psyche’ 2017, ‘Visible reminders of Invisible’Light’ Group Exhibition at the Hunt Museum, 2018 and a solo exhibition ‘Heteropeias’ at the Limerick Museum, Culture Night 2019. Currently working on a Visual and Literary Project, funded by the GUA,2020

“Sheila Richardson is a painter. She is also a clinically trained Art Therapist and  Visual Arts Lecturer. She brings an emphatic engagement with paint as material and painting as a language influenced and enriched by the colour, light and energy of post-impressionist and early modernist painting.  Her paintings are all things Mediterranean. Colour, light, and water. From her first experiences with the delights of the Cote d’Azure, while still a student in Limerick School of Art, to her frequent travels in Morocco, Spain and the Adriatic. The movement of water and the play of shapes in the form of sails, dazzling sunshine on the white sails as the water itself Richardson’s natural proclivities are to colour, heat and bright light. A Sheila Richardson painting is like the sun coming out on a winter’s day. Her paintings celebrate a space which acknowledges the rich tradition of expressive language at our imaginative disposal and reminds us not just to enjoy ourselves in the moment, but also that we have a whole resource of cultural riches at our disposal.
