John Shinnors
John Shinnors was born in Limerick and studied drawing and painting at Limerick School of Art & Design from 1970-72. He has had regular solo exhibitions in Ireland. Since the 1980s, he has undertaken several large-scale commissions, and his work is represented in public and private collections in Ireland and abroad. In 2002, he held a solo show at the Limerick City Gallery, which then travelled to Sligo, featuring large paintings of the Shannon estuary, and previously unseen paintings and drawings. Other recent work includes canvases based on Dun Aengus, Inismór. He was the subject of an RTÉ television documentary, John Shinnors – Painter, and he is the visual artist on the EV+A committee.
is best known now for his three-tone colour scheme on a large scale. He also creates works on a smaller scale of a more fantastical sentiment, usually a reaction to his environment. He works in series and has painted a variety of subjects including animals, everyday objects and religious themes, all of which he attempts to approach in a new way. Pattern is central to all his works, particularly the use of stripes. He quotes Rembrandt (1606-1669) and Vermeer (1632-1675) as the influence on his art in his use of light.
Shinnors has been involved in supporting the visual arts in Ireland through the Shinnors Scholarship for an MA in Curatorial Studies in partnership with Limerick Institute of Technology, Limerick School of Art & Design and Limerick City Gallery of Art as well as the Shinnors Drawing Award at LCGA. He is a member of Aosdána. His work is in a number of important collections including The Arts Council, Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, National Self- Portrait Collection and the Contemporary Irish Society.
