Vivienne St. Clair was born and educated in London. Her earliest memory is holding a paint brush alongside her father. She worked as an archaeological illustrator producing thousands of.drawings, meticulously recording various artifacts for archive and publication, but quietly painting. In 1986 she moved to Ireland painting in earnest and has painted professionally since 1993. She currently lives near Ardfert, Co. Kerry.
Vivienne St, Clair has exhibited nationwide, at Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), Dublin. the Royal Ulster Academy, Belfast for their annual exhibitions and has shown in galleries in the UK, US and France. She has become highly successful and respected among her peers particularly her innocent portrayal of children and her exquisite still life studies.
Her subjects are often personal, such as the paintings of her son, her home, friends and children that live nearby. In these paintings, she illustrates her wide range of skills, specialising in figurative work. This work evokes the qualities of, and pays homage to, the work of the French, Modern English and more recently American Impressionists Some works are built up in several layers over a period of weeks or months while others are painted alla prima, at first time of asking.. Each new painting presents a challenge, a different set of problems to be resolved, In Vivienne’s words ‘the subject is only the starting point ‘When I look at paintings I feel the emotion of the paint, the subject is only the means to make a painting’.
She is represented in Munster by the Draíocht Art Gallery, Adare, Co. Limerick.
